The Commercial Nuclear War Machine Rumbles On...The Ugly Tritium Truth

It has been the contention of this author (for decades) that you cannot separate the Commercial Nuclear Industry from the Military Nuclear Industry as they are equal parts of the whole that is the Siamese Demon Spawn that is the Commercial/Military Complex. I came to this conclusion early in the 80's as my knowledge base on the Gaseous Diffusion plants in Paducah Kentucky and Portsmouth Ohio increased, was solidified when I drove around the Portsmouth Facility, saw the miles upon miles of stacked up, rusting barrels of Depleted Uranium.

I've felt all along that the Anti Nuclear Groups needed to JOIN FORCES with those who opposed Nuclear Weapons, have bemoaned the lack of worry the Anti-Nuclear Weapons folks have given to commercial nuclear reactors....especially in the last say ten years as the NRC races to rubber stamp the License Renewal Applications of America's 104 Ancient Nuclear Behemoths, failed reactors left over from a failed nuclear legacy that the DOD, DOE, NRC and the nuclear industry desperately want to keep up and running to save the industry, and...COULD IT BE THE UNITED STATES NUCLEAR ARSENAL?

PAY ATTENTION FOLKS

One of the BIGGEST problems that the NRC has been ignoring of late is the TRITIUM leaking from an ever increasing number of American Reactor sites. The latest example of this was the UNDERGROUND PIPE RUPTURE at Indian Point on February 21st of this year. The licensee estimates some 100,000 gallons of tritiated water RUSHED into the Hudson River as a result of this significant accident. The NRC Propaganda Team was quick to rush out to the medium with their patented, "No harm no foul" message that stakeholders were never in any immediate danger. (Notice the slick use of the word IMMEDIATE?) Further, the NRC, NEI and the entire nuclear industry are going to a whole lot of trouble to MAKE AMERICANS COMFORTABLE with Tritium LEAKING INTO OUR ENVIRONMENT...WHY?

GOD, WHAT A BRILLIANT QUESTION!

First, how many of you knew that the DOE/DOD used to operate two Military Reactors whose sole purpose was the PRODUCTION OF TRITIUM?...DOES THAT HAVE YOUR ATTENTION?

How many of you knew that those two reactors were permanently closed down in the early 90's for SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS?

Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen used to enhance the explosive yield of every thermonuclear weapon. Tritium has a radioactive decay rate of 5.5% per year and has not been produced in this country for weapons purposes since 1988 when the K Reactor at Savannah River Site in South Carolina was shut down for safety reasons.

COME ON FOLKS, THINK FAST, THIS IS GETTING FUN!

Tritium's decay rate of 5.5 percent a year means that THERMONUCLEAR WEAPONS NEED TO BE RECHARGED on a FAIRLY REGULAR BASIS...the only place to get Tritium is from the operation of NUCLEAR REACTORS! ARE YOU SEEING THE LIGHT BULB YET?

Where are armies of citizens into the tens of thousands storming to the gates of every Nuclear Reactor Site in America that is LEAKING TRITIUM...we are being poisoned for THE WAR WHORES!

The FATAL FLAWS In Canada 72 Hour Shelter In Place Propaganda Crusade

I routinely visit the National Terrorist Alert website where today I stumbled upon an article on Canada's Propaganda Campaign aimed at getting its citizens to spend their money, time and effort purchasing, putting together a Shelter In Place Supply Kit. The first thing I thought of after reading the article, and watching their little You Tube video was, "Fatally Flawed". Being one who lives just three miles down the road from the rat infested (think management) aging, troubled plagued set of Entergy reactors known as Indian Point, I know just a little bit about non working Emergency Evacuation Plans, and the governments desire to change public expectations so that we will selflessly Shelter In Place...you see, dead bodies inside our houses are so much easier to locate and identify once the danger has passed and First Responders can send in the body bags. Rather than prattle on, let me share with you:

- The television ad works backwards in time to show a family successfully coping through 72 hours of an emergency situation, thanks to having prepared an emergency kit.

- Minister Van Loan presented the television ads to a group of 60 emergency management specialists and first responders being trained at the Canadian Emergency Management College.

The 72 Hour kit is a bit of a hoax perpetrated on the masses. I am a stakeholder living less than three miles from the trouble prone Entergy nuclear reactors known as Indian Point…as example, they just recently has a MAJOR radiated water leak (100,000 gallons)due to a ruptured pipe at this ancient facility.

We have an Emergency Evacuation plan…what is interesting, is a nuclear plant cannot operate without one…OK SO FAR. Problem is, the NRC has come to realize these evacuation plans will not work in the case of a significant event at the plants (terrorist attack, or a significant release of radioactive materials into the environment). Because of this, they have started (wrongfully) reshaping public expectations, pushing us to accept the reality of Sheltering In Place, reliance upon said 72 hour kit. First, since it is the Nuclear Industry that is creating this need for a 72 hour kit, why aren’t they or the NRC being required to SUPPLY STAKEHOLDERS with said kits at their expense?

Secondly, there are some major flaws and/or propaganda problems with this so called 72 hour Sheltering Scenario…first, we can look at Hurricane Katrina as one example of this, but there are far more worrisome ones.

1. The CDC (Centers For Disease Control) website has Sheltering in Place in the case of a terrorist attack using certain biological and/or nuclear devices (suitcase nuke) lasting up to two weeks (or longer).

2. Why isn’t Canada and the United States and their NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) talking about the biggest problem associated with Sheltering in Place…Hypothermia. Read the sheltering in place criteria (we get them once a year here with our Emergency Management Booklet)and the first thing you are told to do is TURN OFF YOUR HEAT, shut the dampers on your fireplace or wood stove. Tell me sirs, how long can you last sheltering in place if you house temperature drops to say ten above zero? How much does that figure dwindle if say I am 70 years of age, and not in the best of health?

Lastly, lets talk about matters of Economic Justice when it comes to these 72 hour kits…right now as example, we have 12.5 million Americans out of work, and the economy has not finished bottoming out yet. Even in the best of times there are millions of Americans living at or below the poverty level that CANNOT AFFORD THESE 72 HOUR KITS…what about them?

To understand Green Nuclear Underground, I would encourage my readers to visit the original Anti-Nuclear blog known as the Green Nuclear Butterfly. As time allows, many of the more important articles from that blog will be moved over here, or at least cross linked. Instead, this blog will cover nuclear news stories and events from the perspective of a long time anti-nuclear activist. We will tweak the nose of the Nuclear Industry, the NRC and Washington Politicians such as Mr. Fake Anti Nuclear Congressman John Hall at every opportunity. As time evolves, we hope to be the online resource many in the anti-nuclear movement go to as we build our side bar links list, and write worthwhile content. Lastly, the Green Nuclear Underground will serve as witness to the fact, "We Told You So".
